14 Hills, Fenchurch Street

December 10, 2020

If you haven’t already seen 14 Hills all over Instagram then you will be booking your next girls night, brunch, or birthday here once I’ve told you a bit more about it – just you wait!

I recently (ish) went to the jaw-droppingly gorgeous 14 Hills with some equally gorgeous foodies that you must check out on Instagram if you don’t already follow them: @EmilyEatsLondon, @SophiaEatsAlot, @TheRudeGuide and @EatsLondonLife. We got the Weekday Set Menu which is usually £35 for three courses but at the time they were running an offer of £25 for the same menu.

The restaurant is a modern European restaurant serving brasserie classics with an edge. It is set on the 14th floor of 120 Fenchurch street one of London’s skyscrapers and offers some of the best views over London. You enter via a lift (the queue on entry, even with everything going on and the latest 10 pm curfew is indicative of how popular this restaurant is), and the roof is projected with a floral pattern above the entrance – giving you a taste of what’s to come! The restaurant is below one of London’s largest (and one of the least known about) public roof gardens. It is the newest venture of D&D who have launched popular success stories like Coq D’Argent, 100 Wardour Street and Pont De La Tour. it has been designed by top restaurant designer Robert Angell who has designed the likes of Hutong in the Shard, and has been made to reflect the roof garden above it.

If you are someone that can happily sit through a meal without taking photos of your cocktails, your meal, the view from a rooftop location, or the uber-stylish interiors of your venue, then this may not be the restaurant for you. It is one of the most beautiful restaurants/bars that I have ever been to; not only does it have incredibly stunning views over London, but the interiors rival even sunset views of London. Designed to be a gorgeous tropical oasis in the sky, the restaurant boasts over 2,500 evergreen plants, mature trees, shrubs, and seasonal climbers, creating a magical foliage-filled wonderland in the sky. Pair this with dim lighting from an assortment of artistic hanging light fittings, lamps with pink lampshades, large round booths (we were lucky enough to get one right on the corner giving us a 180-degree view over London), and a large onyx bar taking centre stage. Anyone that knows me will know that this is literally my idea of heaven: rooftop bar over London at sunset, surrounded by foliage and trees, sipping a beautiful pink cocktail with real flowers in it – I’ve died and gone to Instagrammer heaven.

The cocktail I just mentioned was the Blushing Bloom: combining Tanqueray 43 gin with St. Germain elderflower, rhubarb and raspberry jam and fresh lemon. It was beautiful and it was deliciously refreshing and fruity – I would definitely order it again, it took everything I had to drink it slowly (it was £13.50 after all).

While we enjoyed our cocktails they brought out the most delicious warm and crusty bread with butter – I could have eaten an entire loaf to myself! For my starter, I chose the Kale Salad which was comprised of grilled kale, cumin-spiced carrots, coconut yoghurt and carrot crisps. It didn’t set my world alight – it is a kale salad after all – but it was light and full of flavour so quite nice overall, although nothing to write home about (ironically).

Next up I got the 230g bavette steak with red chimichurri sauce, with a side of chips. The steak was deliciously charred on the outside and perfectly pink in the middle and really tender, the chimichurri sauce packed a punch and the two went together really well. The chips again were really good, golden and crispy with fluffy centre – delish!

For dessert I had trouble deciding between all three (shock). The options were: Chilled Rice with plum marmalade and candied macadamia nuts, Fig with Sauternes, croquant and almond ice cream, or the Custard Tart with nutmeg, shortcrust pastry and salted caramel ice cream. We asked the waiter and he recommended the custard tart, and it was so so delicious. I love custard anyway but this tart was divine and the nutmeg perfectly balanced out the sugar to stop it being too sweet.

The manager was also kind enough to offer us a complimentary bottle of Champers after the waitress knocked over one of the girl’s glasses – and who doesn’t like complimentary Champagne?

So, next time your girl group is stuck on where to go for cocktails, or where to celebrate their next Birthday, go check out the beautiful 14 Hills and make sure you have fully charged phones – you won’t be disappointed!
