Coqfighter, Soho

August 18, 2019

If you are as much of a fried chicken lover as I am, you need to make flying down to Coqfighters a priority! The Aussie-owned street-food trader can already be found in both Boxpark Shoreditch and Croydon, but this is its first table-service restaurant and it happens to be located on Beak Street – where else? You’ve probably seen this glorious fried chicken joint doing the rounds on Instagram, I certainly had and I couldn’t wait a moment longer!

The pared-down menu ensures that each dish is impeccably executed and allows you to order almost everything on the menu…- if you go with me anyway – meaning minimal food envy! The menu offers pan-Asian inspired fried chicken dishes, and my top tip here is to order more than you should, it’s so delicious you will have finished it all before you realise how utterly stuffed you are…

We arrived at around 6pm as we were both starving and couldn’t wait for a fried chicken feast. I would recommend arriving early as we were swiftly seated and managed to bag ourselves the window seat, perfect for some people watching! After about half an hour of being there was a queue of about 8 people outside, so we were pretty pleased with ourselves and a little smug.

The interior is dark with high bar stools and communal eating style benches, with a loud rock ‘n’ roll stereo playing. It’s a really cool vibe inside but as a big people watching fan, I’d say the window seat is the best in the house, so get there early and grab it!

I am obsessed with Buffalo sauce, it’s the King of sauces. So, it will come as no surprise that I saw the Honey Ginger Buffalo Burger on the menu – and numerous times on Instagram before, obviously – and had to have it! While the sauce didn’t have the usual kick of Buffalo sauce and was replaced with a sweeter flavour from the honey and ginger, delicious! Plus it pooled out of the burger onto the plate, making the perfect chip dipping sauce! The traditional blue cheese was replaced with smoked garlic mayo which was the perfect addition. The chicken was beautifully crispy and golden as you’d expect, and perfectly cooked, and the pickles added an extra texture that made it a clucking great chicken burger!

My boyfriend went for the Green Chilli Cheese burger which was fried chicken thigh again, with shredded iceberg, pickled green chilli, American cheese and chipotle mayo. Of course, in the name of my blog, and being a greedy pig, I had to try some – if your boyfriend doesn’t let you try his food what is even the point? Again, the chicken was both perfectly crisp and moist, the iceberg gave it some texture and freshness and the chilli and chipotle mayo brought the heat. Although, I may have to order it next time to properly review it as I was only allowed a bite…big though it was!

I also ordered the fried chicken Bao bun with Szechuan mayo, pickled daikon, coriander and Korean hot sauce. I love Bao buns and this one was no exception, the chicken perfectly fried again as we had come to expect, beautifully fluffy bao bun, heat from the mayo and freshness and zestiness from the pickled daikon, yum!

We got the sharing portion of chicken wings, these were innncredddiiibbllleee! Vodka and sesame batter served with two mind-blowing sauces – soy garlic glaze and Korean hot sauce. The sauces came with a brush so you could ‘paint’ the sauces on, DIY style. This meant that you could choose which sauce you wanted, and how much, the crispy batter didn’t get soggy from pre-added sauce, and you get to play artist which is always a plus in my book!

We were intrigued by the Cheesy Corn, think mac & cheese, but with corn, so we had to try it! Mac & Cheese is one of my favourite things to eat, when hungover you can find me on the sofa (or bed, depending which was easier), eating mac & cheese and watching old Disney films. The cheesy corn was an interesting mix of salty gooey cheese and sweetcorn, and while it was very tasty it unfortunately didn’t knock mac & cheese off the top spot for me.

With all these delicious sauces knocking about it would have been criminal not to order a portion of fries for dipping, so we did! We ordered dashi and smoked paprika salt fries, that were delicious in their own right, but even better when mopping up leftover sauce!

Basically, if you have taste buds, I suggest you grab your wingman and order as much of their menu as your bellies can handle, and then order some more…
