London

Mthr, Canary Wharf

March 22, 2020

Happy Mother’s Day all you lovely mummies! Are you ready to hear about the Mthr of all new rooftop restaurants? I thought you would be.

Luckily I managed to get my visit to Mthr in a week before self-isolation took hold, a pretty good way to spend one of my last days of freedom!

Mthr is a super chic restaurant and lounge house on the 20th floor of The Collective, Canary Wharf, the largest co-living space in the world;  see you’ve learnt your something new for the day, you’re welcome. Anyway, the restaurant has super chic interiors that I will tell you about in a sec, because wow, and striking views of London – what more do you want? I took my Mum (how could I not really), and we timed our visit so that we could catch the sunset because if there’s one thing I love more than a rooftop bar it’s a beautiful sunset. We were a little anxious that it was cloudy all day and that we may not see the epic sunset that we were hoping for, but the sun came through for us and set very nicely – see below.

The interiors are very hipster chic with modern industrial style ceilings, textured blues and greys on the walls and bar and accents of dusty pinks and plants dotted around. The restaurant on one end leads to clusters of comfy chairs around small tables where you can have a cocktail and admire the view, to a more lounge-style area at the other end with big sofas for large groups. Above the bar is a beautifully eye-catching installation of leaves and twigs which I absolutely loved (I seriously haven’t done that justice but you can see what I mean from the pics below luckily!). The overall effect is effortlessly stylish yet relaxed – can you tell I really liked it?

Have another one!
This is the cool installation I was talking about!

So firstly a quick public service announcement! From 5pm-7pm EVERY SINGLE DAY Mthr have an ‘Unwind Happy Hour’ where they do 2 for 1 drinks specials, and when cocktails are only £9 to start with this is a STEAL! Literally unheard of for a London rooftop bar!

The cocktail list comprises of cocktails that utilise global flavours and fresh ingredients, I went for the Pink Señorita which was made with Mezcal (Siri tells me this is a Mexican distilled alcohol made from agave), Triple Sec, Lemon Juice and Pink Lemonade – it was delicious and really refreshing but at the end of the day I’d ordered it because it was pink – and it didn’t disappoint. My mum ordered the Beet Generation with Rum, Sherry, Falernum (a sweet Caribbean syrup with flavours of ginger, lime, and almond – thanks Siri), Black Cherry and Beetroot Shrub. It was really interesting unlike any drink I’ve tried before, also props to mum for choosing a drink that colour coordinated with mine without me saying anything – a born ‘grammer. After these, we had two really great G&Ts (each) and chatted away while the sun set, before we realised that we had been sat there nattering for two hours and hadn’t even sat at our table. The staff were incredibly lovely and didn’t rush us at all though which we really appreciated!

The Head Chef of Mthr – Arnaud Delannay has also been Head Chef at Darwin Brasserie and VIVI – both of which I loved! He has developed a menu full of sharing dishes that places an emphasis on an interactive family-style dining experience that really brings people together to share food inspired by global culinary influences. To start we shared Black Truffle Arancini with Black Garlic Mayo, Camembert Croquettes with Cranberry Jam and Tahini Roasted Cauliflower with Coriander and Red Onion. The Arancini were beautifully golden with a thin crunchy crust and creamy inside with a deliciously earthy truffle flavour that was beautiful with the slightly sweet black garlic mayo and salty parmesan sprinkled over the top. From one deep-fried sphere to another (oops) the camembert croquettes were similarly golden and crunchy on the outside and the centre oozed melted gooey cheesy deliciousness – paired perfectly with the sweet cranberry jam. The tahini roasted cauliflower was really yummy and probably something that would be great to try at home, and had a fresh mint and red onion salad with it that was really fresh with the spice.

We both then decided on the Steak Frites, a 9oz Onglet steak with French Fries & Peppercorn Sauce (medium rare obvs). Onglet is most commonly known as hanger steak in English and has also been called the butcher’s steak because it is said that they recognised it’s superior flavour and so kept it for themselves rather than displaying it! It was perfectly cooked and really flavoursome as you’d imagine, the chips were thin and crispy and the peppercorn sauce was rich and creamy – perfection! We also had a bottle of wine but I couldn’t tell you which – but it was great (helpful I know).

For dessert, I saw Chocolate Nemesis on the menu and was intrigued – they didn’t really explain what it is and I couldn’t tell you categorically but it was a sort of chocolate brownie cakey type thing with something that was like a smooth creamy chocolate dessert topped with a quenelle of cream and some butterscotch sauce – very rich but a chocoholic’s heaven. Mum went for a Banoffee Parfait with Hazelnut Brittle which I tried some of  and it was really nice and a lot lighter than my choice, but I’m a chocolate girl at heart!

Mthr also do a bottomless brunch for £25…just saying! This includes a personal market table feast served at your table that includes a selection of breakfast favourites, and unlimited Mimosas, Bellinis, Prosecco or Sangria – hell yeah! Sadly the dreaded C word meant that I had to cancel my booking but as soon as everything goes back to normal, you’ll know where to find me!

I hope you and your loved ones are all well and staying safe at home, sending all my love to you all! Xx
